The poor facts about Berlin tell you it is poor. Berlin has over 63 billions of debts – increasing. Every 5th person in Berlin lives on social care; in some areas it is as high as 50%. The unemployment rate is 13.3% almost twice as high the country`s average.
Berlin is the biggest taker by far when you compare it to the other German counties. Two fifth of the money to support the counties goes to Berlin. Therefore it is not a surprise that counties like Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg who give the money want that Berlin saves more money than taking it.
However Berlin itself sees herself as victim of saving money since 20 years. Well that they are not saving as much as others when you compare them with other counties is something the Berliner ignores. Berlin only earns two third of its spending. Everything else they get from others. Nevertheless, the Berliner is convinced that they earn to get more money. All kindergarten are for free in Berlin this is unique. Nor Munich nor Hamburg have such a luxury. However the Berliner has already new ideas free lunch for all school kids, as well as free rides on public transportation. However even Berliner think this is a bit too much.
The song of Westerhagen which the major was using for his campaign is the perfect hymn for Berlin `Don`t worry, it will work out. We will lend some money and then everything looks good again. I am feeling good, I am feeling good…
At the end of the day Berlin is living for years now with the image of being a young city, which invents itself new again and again. And that is maybe exactly the reason why it is poor, however sexy!
